In 2013 Rachel and Nick Cope founded their mesmerising wallpaper brand: Calico Wallpaper. Their mission was to create something different and spectacular. They wanted to create a product that had its own character. A product that could be moulded to the client’s desire and ultimately be a work of beauty. That is exactly what they have achieved. Each collection is custom made, non-repeat and based on handmade patterns and techniques, which are enhanced through sophisticated technological advances.
By building on ancient traditional Japanese and Turkish paper marbling methods and digital technologies; Rachel and Nick have created a mesmerising wallpaper that is much more than a means of covering a wall. Their wallpapers are in itself pieces of art. They add new environments and elements to an interior and create visionary delights and surprises. It’s a beautiful, innovative and truly unique product.
One of the aspects that sets Calico Wallpaper apart from other wallpaper collections is the way they achieve their designs. All their prints start off with a handmade pattern, which is in itself an artistic process using interesting materials, and are then augmented with sophisticated technology. To show how much thought goes into their collections, I picked out two to showcase their work process.
Bubbles. Already the word makes us think of the delicate texture of bubbles – their short lived beauty, changing shapes and iridescent shine. But who would have thought that you could capture their essence on a piece of paper?
The team at Calico Wallpaper, in collaboration with BCXSY did the unthinkable and found a way to make bubbles immortal. They started with a liquid solution of soap, ink and glycerin which they blew into with a straw, filling it with bubbles. They then softly placed a piece of paper onto the bubbles to get an imprint. After many imprints, with many solutions, they chose their favourite ones and adjusted these with the use of advanced digital technologies. And this is where the real magic happened – beautiful, crisp, enormous bubbles. A whole world that was previously invisible to the naked eye and a truly magnificent one. The Microcosmos collection was born.
When we imagine landscapes, we imagine different elevations – mountains, valleys, rivers. We imagine a multitude of depths and surfaces. When I first looked at Topographies, that is what I saw – an unpredictable, raw texture with various cracks and elevations. It looked like a rough, but beautifully preserved architectural surface. So sharp and so real, I almost didn’t believe it wasn’t three dimensional.
Together with Snarkitecture, Calico Wallpaper created this mesmerising wallpaper by tearing up strips of paper and layering them on top of each other to create a beautiful three dimensional surface. This was then turned into a two dimensional wallpaper through digital means. The result is so authentic it’s simply stunning.
I came across so many beautiful projects using Calico Wallpapers during my research, I had to force myself to minimise and only choose my three favourite ones for you here. So here go my top three Calico Wallpaper interiors which, for me, really show off the artistic nature of these elegant designs.
